Career problems

Sent to Job Experts August 21, 2006 11:13 a.m.

I graduated from college with a degree in Psychology in 1994. Since then I have only been able to secure minimum wage jobs. I have never received a promotion in all that time, attribute it to a lack of talent, and have retired at the age of 35. My lack of professional success bothers me a great deal. Do you have any advice?

Typically, it is difficult to attain a career in psychology without having at least obtained a master's program. With the master's program you can secure a position in therapy, social service work, counseling, etc... however, if you do not wish to proceed with a higher degree in Psychology you can pursue the following alternatives as quoted in this article. Here is a similar article that specifies skills that you can use to revise or work on your resume.

The article provides the following alternative careers.

Admissions/Financial Aid

Bank Management
Child/Youth/Elder Care

Bottomline: You do not have to struggle with minimum wage earnings and lack of job growth. Go back to your career counselor and ask help on developing a resume to land you one of these positions.

I was also a psych major, but I did not want to pursue psychology, instead I went to law school and became an attorney. However, I stopped law practice to raise a family and I am now a real estate broker. I am telling you this to encourage you that you can pursue a well paying, recognized position if you look for it. Just having a college degree opens tons of doors than not having one. Good
luck.
