Question

Transfer skills to personal business

Sent to Job Experts July 24, 2006 5:40 a.m.

I would like to know what type of home business I can begin by utilizing the job skills I currently have. I currently work as a Psychological Associate in the prison system in Alabama. I have worked in both Psychiatric and Prison settings. I also have limited accounting skills and good office and data entry skills. I also teach as an Adjunct Psychology Instructor with undergraduates.

My degrees are: AAT in Accounting; BA in Sociology with a minor in African-American Studies; M.Ed. in Counseling; CAGS in Counseling with a focus on Psychological Testing, Substance Abuse, and Family Counseling; CAGS in Human Development and Education with a focus on Cultural Studies.

My hobbies are; Reading, listening to music, collecting stamps.

Thank you for your assistance.

You have a number of skills which could be utilized in a home based business.

Obviously, you could open a private counseling practice (obviously depending on the state reguirements in Alabama)

You could combine the teaching and Substance Abuse experience into a Employee training program for supervisory personell as part of a Drug Free Workplace program. (How to recognize drug use in employees) You could also work with school in teaching teachers how to identify drug use.

You could also run seminars for prison staff on dealing with stress reduction, management of hostile situations (defusing a volitile situation)

Why do you want a "home base business"?
What is your financial situation? (How much do you have to invest in starting the business)
How old are you? Are you willing to spend a little time getting some training?
The answer to these questions will help me give you some additional idea hopefully

You could also turn the stamp collecting into a business - buying and selling stamps on Ebay

I would like a home-based business as a back up to my counseling position. Due to conflict with some staff, I may leave. I also would like to return to school and would like additional income to pay tuition. I am a 54 year old widow. I would be willing to get additional training.

Thank you for your assistance.

Is there any reason that you would be unable to start you own counseling (private practice) - by a contract preventing you from competing for example?

One thing that comes to mind is tutoring - at the college or high school level. You have a good broad base of education - and educational experience. This is something that can be done at home - or in the student's home.

Starting a series of seminars - "Dealing with drugs in the workplace", Violence in the Workplace - Handling volitile situations" - these type of programs - which you would give - either 1/2 day or all day programs at locations around the area (even go state wide or national) - These types of things are often held at Hotels/Motels in their conference room. They charge a certaiin amount per person - including handouts etc.

These are some idea - Training seminars if well developed and well attended could be very profitable - and flexible in that you schedule them when you want.
